A study of heads and shadows by Pjczar A study of heads and shadows by Pjczar
NOTE: I am not saying this is how to do it I am not saying this is the only way to do it I am not saying that I am the best Im only saying this is how i would do it

Notes for the top 2 rows:

1: A rough outline is all i started with the idea of how his head should go just popped into my brain.

2: I remake the first one using it as referance, I use finer lines that dont cause that squiggaly hand done effect. I add in the eyes parts like the iris and the pupil and color those parts with the shadow on the eyes thats caused by the eyelid and brow bone.

3: I add coloring and the lines where shadows would appear to the face and head.

4: I bring it all down to base grey scales so u guys can see clearly where the shadows are and arent.

Notes for bottom row:

This is just a little pissed off chibi dude/chick 's face thought id add it in cause i had more room on the page.

So, how do you make a shadow, like if you use GIMP or PAINT?

you have to make a curved line where 2 or more colors converge. if one color is darker then another it will appear to be a shadow having been created by a light source.

as far as actually doing it in gimp or paint depends on the artist and the picture. there are so many ways to make shadow effect it i cant even explain really.
I used Adobe Flash when i made this because with it you make line art and then you can select each section fill in the color and tweak the borders of that fill.
sorry i cant give much more help then that.
